Bloomberg runs with an interesting piece today suggesting that US drugmakers and healthcare organisations may take their own measures to reduce costs in face of a stalled healthcare reform bill.

The article quotes MTS Health Partners, with Senior Managing Director Curtis Lane seeing consolidation and cost-cutting as the way forward for drug companies, insurers and hospitals. The cost of healthcare has spiralled in the last decade, spurred on by an aging population in a trend set to continue. In addition, since the Democrats lost their filibuster-proof sixty vote majority in January, passage of President Obama’s proposed solution seems a long way off and mergers may be one way to recognise efficiencies without such fundamental reform.

However, Obama has vowed to keep driving healthcare reform onward, saying “we’ve got to punch it through,” Bloomberg quotes.

Is healthcare reform dead or just resting?
