Launch indicators

I'm wondering what metrics people use as an early assessment of launch (and lifecycle) success for a new drug? Historically, my company has looked at some soft metrics such as awareness, physician feedback surveys etc. as lead markers for sales, but are there more precise methods?
Also, are these indicators changing as more drugs are launched that face multiple approvals over their lifetime for different indications?
Interested to know some thoughts here.
