Reading the news there seems to be a trend toward big pharma striking drug deals earlier in the development process, e.g. more deals at phase I or even preclinical.

Does anyone know of any public domain figures / sources that provide historic info on this - e.g. number of deals by drug stage / size of deal etc.?

Not sure of any sources. My take on this is that there's probably not any more deals being done at early stage, just that these are being reported more openly as part of the broader dissemination of news through modern technology, backed by a pharma company PR drive for their shareholders.
